A PressTV correspondent reports the Iranian Spokeman of the Velayat 91 naval drills as saying foreign media has reported the drills as an attempt by Iran to militarize the region, so that the West can sell more weapons to Middle Eastern countries, which he said contain a chip, allowing the West to disable the weapons at any time. “These weapons can only be used if it’s in the interest of these powers,” he said, and suggested countries in the region become self-sufficient in these areas.

Iranian naval forces have so far warned off 30 transregional spy drones from entering the Velayat 91 military maneuver zone, a senior Iranian commander said.

On the fifth day of the military maneuvers on Tuesday, the spokesman for the Velayat 91 naval drills Rear Admiral Amir Rastegari noted that Iranian forces have so far stopped 30 intrusion attempts by foreign spy drones and reconnaissance aircraft into the maneuver zone.

“Different types of reconnaissance and spy aircraft that were attempting to enter the maneuver zone to spy and gather information, faced warnings from the Navy surface units and Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base,” the commander added.

Rastegari stated that Iranian forces have also issued warnings on several occasions to transregional vessels that were attempting to get close to the exercise zone.

Iran’s Navy launched the six-day naval maneuvers codenamed Velayat 91 on December 28, 2012, in order to display the country’s capabilities in defending its maritime borders.

The specialized maritime maneuver covers an area from east of the Strait of Hormuz in the Sea of Oman to north of the Indian Ocean as far as the 18th parallel north.

Over the past few years, Iran has held several military drills to enhance the defensive capabilities of its armed forces and to test modern military tactics and equipment.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly assured other nations, especially its neighbors, that its military might poses no threat to other countries, stating that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.

Iran Test-Fires Long-Range Missiles in Velayat 91 Naval Drills

Iranian naval forces have successfully test fired Qader (Capable) coast-to-sea and Nour (Light) surface-to-surface missiles on the fifth day of the Velayat 91 military maneuvers, Press TV reports.

 

 

 

Spokesman for the Velayat 91 naval drill Rear Admiral Amir Rastegari told Press TV on Tuesday that Qader cruise missile had successfully and precisely hit and destroyed its mock enemy target during the exercises.

“Qader coast-to-sea missile has been designed and produced by domestic industries,” the Iranian commander added.

Referring to the indigenous long-range Nour missile, Rastegari said, “Nour surface-to-surface missile is launched from surface units and is used to destroy surface targets.”

“Nour missile had previously passed all its tests with success and the new version is an optimized version of this missile,” Rastegari added.

Iran Launches Massive Naval Drill in Straits of Hormuz

Velayat 91 technical naval drills launched. Iran is holding a technical naval drill in Oman Sea, North of Indian Ocean, and East of Strait of Hormuz, in the Persian Gulf. Officials say in these six day drills, the country will practice complex military tactics using advanced weaponry, including warships, hovercrafts, helicopters, ground to sea missiles and submarines.

 

Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibolah Sayyari told us about the aim of these drills and its message for Iran’s enemies and friends.

The aim of the Velayat 91 Drills is to show the strength of Iran’s Navy and its ability to defend the country’s territorial waters, its interests and its resources in the sea.

The drills also demonstrate Iran’s ability to bring sustainable security in the region. The drills have a message of peace for the countries in the region and it conveys to its enemies that the Iranians are serious about protecting their borders, interests and resources.

The top commander also stated that Iran’s Navy on the first day of the drills will send a fleet of warships to the high seas to display its power and more.

On the first day of the drills, ships and submarines, will go to their locations and get ready for the tactical stage of the maneuvers. Forces in shores will also get ready for the tactical phase of the drills. In addition our 23rd fleet will be deployed to the high seas to protect commercial ships and oil tankers and to counter piracy in Gulf of Aden.

Over the past few years, Iran has held several military drills to enhance the defense capabilities of its armed forces and to test modern military tactics and equipment.

On the third day of Iran’s extensive drills in the region surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, the Navy’s artilleries will exercise shooting marine surface targets of aggressive forces, a senior Iranian commander says.

Rear Admiral Amir Rastegari, spokesman for the ongoing Velayat 91 naval drills, said that Iranian commandoes, riflemen, and special operational forces will exercise engaging aggressive forces on Sunday.

The special operational forces and the floating units division will also exercise overcoming aggressive vessels using helicopters, he said.

S. Korea Stages Live-Fire Exercises Near Disputed Sea Border with N. Korea

South Korean Marines staged a live-fire drill on Wednesday near the disputed Yellow Sea border with North Korea.

The maneuvers involved self-propelled howitzers and a multiple rocket launch system was held on two islands, Baengnyeong and Yeonpyeong, the military said.

Hundreds of island residents were evacuated into safe zones during the two-hour drill.

There was no response from the North, AFP reported.

A similar drill on Yeonpyeong in 2010 provoked a North Korean artillery barrage which killed four people.
