Vodafone in all their magnificence and gorgeosity have shocked the monkey and released a “Law Enforcement Disclosure Report” (here). At the request of little old Gardai.

Unfortunately they have upset the Department of Justice who are claiming that the information Vodafone released could ‘compromise national security and hinder investigation of  serious criminal activity’.

The wonderful folk at Vodafone reveal in the report the surveillance practices of governments in 29 countries which it operates in, but stops short of disclosing details of data surveillance in Ireland.

One can only assume this is to thwart any recriminations, from spooks. Vodafone also point out in the release that reports from other operators can have inherent flaws…

We have compared the statistical information we hold for our own operations in the two countries in question with the information recently published by other local operators in those countries. For some categories of agency and authority demand, the volumes involved seem closely comparable between Vodafone and other local operators, although as explained above, there is a significant risk of under or over-counting overlapping demands issued to multiple operators. Furthermore, it is also clear that certain categories of agency and authority demand have been omitted from local operators’ publications, either to comply with legal restrictions (in the case of Australia) or (in Germany) for reasons not disclosed to us.”

The Report chants the mantra “it is unlawful to disclose any information related to wiretapping or interception of the content of phone calls and messages including whether such capabilities exist.” but points that in 6 countries “authorities” have unfettered access and that the law either ‘obliges’ telecom operators to install direct access pipes, or allow governments to do so.

Vodafone further explain that these 6 un-named countries have “regimens” that could retaliate by imprisoning staff…who could that be? (read the .pdf)

However after reading through the lines and thinking about it for a few minutes…it’s not hard to narrow down the “6” countries. The graphic below from The Guardian’s Juliette Garside makes this a no brainer.

With all respect to the fantastic and marvellous work Law Enforcement do, it is important Telecommunication Companies are finally finding their own voice amongst the schrills and squawks that have become a hysterical mist of white noise…well done Vodafone.

Leaked Document Shows Bahrain Gov’t Planning to Stockpile More Tear Gas Canisters Than People in Country

In Archive, Bahrain, Bahrain, Police Brutality, Police State on October 24, 2013 at 7:48 AM

Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior is planning to import 1.6 million tear gas canisters and 90,000 tear gas grenades, according to a leaked document, published today by research and advocacy group Bahrain Watch.  The document — apparently a tender issued by the Ministry of Interior’s Purchasing Directorate — shows that Bahrain’s security forces are stockpiling massive amounts of tear gas, despite serious concerns of international NGOs and the United Nations Human Rights Council.  These groups have called Bahrain’s use of tear gas “unnecessary and indiscriminate”, and “lethal”.  This planned new shipment will supply Bahrain with more tear gas canisters than the entire population of the country.

Bahrain Watch understands that no shipment related to this tender has yet been made, however, such a shipment could begin at any time, given the date of the tender.

Bahrain has historically used US-origin tear gas, but the State Department apparently blocked further US exports over concerns about its “excessive use” in May 2012.  Bahrain Watch believes that one of the firms that seem to be supplying Bahrain currently may be planning the shipment:

  1. Rheinmetall Denel Munitions – a German/South African company. Tear gas made by this company has been seen in Bahrain since 2011. The canister that killed 14-year old Ali Jawad al-Sheikh on 31st August 2011 is visually similar to thosemanufactured by Rheinmetall Denel.

  1. DaeKwang Chemical Company Ltd and Korea C.N.O. Tech Ltd – two South Korean firms. Unmarked tear gas canisters, as well as tear gas grenades, which are visually identical to those originally manufactured by DaeKwang and exported by C.N.O. Tech have been seen in Bahrain since late 2011. The canister that killed 15-year old Sayed Hashim Sayed Saeed on 31st December 2011 looks visually identical to those manufactured by DaeKwang.

In order to stop any further shipments of tear gas, Bahrain Watch is launching a campaign entitled “Stop The Shipment” (, and @StopTheShipment on Twitter.  The campaign invites participants to send complaint messages via e-mail, Twitter, and Facebook to Bahrain’s tear gas suppliers, as well as export licensing authorities in these countries.  With enough public and media pressure the campaign could result in export licenses being revoked, and shipments being blocked similar to what has happened previously with US-made tear gas products.

Barrett Brown – Message to Supporters

Barrett Brown has dispatched a communique forth with presented to you here

Statement from Barrett to supporters, August 19th

Over the last year I have been humbled by the degree of support I have received from information activists across the globe. In particular, I’d like to thank Kevin Gallagher, Gregg Housh and Lauren Pespisa for their continuing efforts in raising funds and keeping the public informed about the case. But I also owe a debt of gratitude to everyone who has so much as posted a tweet about this matter; in doing so, you have turned this affair into a new opportunity to educate the nation about what the government and its corporate partners are doing behind closed doors and the risks this alliance presents to the public itself. To see this dangerous cyber-industrial complex being brought to the attention of more and more people is a source of great satisfaction for me, and I am sure it is for Jeremy Hammond, as well. It tells us that what we are undergoing is not in vain, and that is a gift beyond measure.

Again, I thank you all.

As a part of a “joint” fund raiser for Jermy Hammond and Barrett Brown , Stanley Cohen mad this rather endearing speech

It was also of some relief that news reached the outer perimeter that Barrett’s continuance has been allowed

Trial is set for April 28th 2014 with a second trial set for May 2014

Below is a message from Jeremy

I hope this evening finds you all in the best of health and highest of spirit. Thanks for coming out to show support for me and Barrett Brown.

I want to shout out to all my brothers and sisters locked down, here at New York Metropolitan Correctional Center, at Brooklyn MDC, at Rikers Island, in the Tombs, at Cook County Jail in Chicago, and to all those on hunger strikes in California prisons and Guantanamo Bay.

And to Bradley Manning, Barrett Brown, Julian Assange, the Tinley Park Five, the NATO Five, Jerry Koch, and my wonderful twin brother, Jason Hammond.

Also thanks to the folks who put this event together, who have attended my court dates, who have written letters and sent books, and who went to the noise demonstrations outside the jail here. Your acts of solidarity bring us all great encouragement, inspiration, and strength during these harsh times.

Comrades, we are up against a racist capitalist power structure that wages wars, destroys the environment and spies on our every move! They lock up millions of people in cages for “crimes” that corrupt governments and multi-national corporations also commit on an everyday basis and on a greater magnitude, yet we are the criminals.

They lock us up for guns and drugs when defense contractors and pharmaceutical companies are the top traffickers. They call us thieves when it’s Wall Street 1%ers who rob us blind, exploit our labor, evict us out of our homes, and get billion dollar bailouts.

They condemn hackers and leakers when the NSA, CIA, and FBI illegally spy on everybody, and wage cyber espionage through viruses and hacking for foreign government systems.

They put signs everywhere that say “If you see something, say something” as if their extensive surveillance camera systems aren’t enough, they also want us to become additional eyes and ears for the police against our own neighbors.

But if you point out suspicious activities of our own government, if you leak information that should be free and public anyway, then they will follow you to the ends of the Earth to put you in prison.

Even if you simply report on these leaks, they will discredit you, subpoena you for your sources, or just put you in prison on a bunch of trumped up charges like they did Barrett Brown.

They repress us, infiltrate us, entrap us, harass our families and friends, and call us criminals, terrorists, and traitors, and break their own laws to try to stop us because we work to expose the truth.

They are scared that if people know the truth, the day will come when they will have to answer for their own crimes. But can we trust whatever “independent review panel” they put together to investigate the NSA? After all the lies and egregious illegality, do you think any of them will be charged or do time? Will we ever be satisfied with any reforms they promise?

The answer is obviously no.

Justice can never be found in their courtrooms.

Yes, we need to eliminate mandatory minimum sentences, but Attorney General Eric Holder doesn’t give a damn about prison overcrowding.

The Obama administration is not interested in any such debate about “the balance of privacy and security” because they will keep spying on everyone, regardless of public opinion, until we stop them.

The time for talk is over, it’s time for collective refusal, civil disobedience, and direct action. We must support all those who risked their freedom and lives to expose and confront the power structure, and continue the struggle until we stop these wars and the prison walls come crumbling down and we can all be together again free and equal!

Anonymous: Operation Bahrain F1 – Grand Prix Formula 1 To Be Shut Down

In Anonymous, Bahrain, Bahrain, OpBahrain, World Revolution on April 15, 2013 at 3:32 AM

Greetings World,

We are Anonymous. And we have watched since the last Grand Prix F1 race in Manama, Bahrain. Since last year, we have had millions of eyes trained on the continuing oppression of our freedom loving brethren in Bahrain by the self-made “King” in Manama.

Since last year, when Anonymous in solidarity with hundreds of thousands of Bahraini – shut down the Grand Prix F1 race and said “no” to blood racing. One year since Anonymous dumped the personal information including credit card and passport numbers, of all the F1 attendees in Bahrain – and yet Bernnie Eccelstone and the “Royal Family” of Bahrain have learned nothing. So we are coming forward this year to wreck your little party again Mr. Eccelstone. Anonymous will not stand by and allow you a race fueled by the blood of our freedom loving comrades in Bahrain.

Beginning with the opening festivities of your little blood race, you can expect the presence of Anons from all over the globe inside your intertoobz. We will remove you from the world wide web, whether you be Grand Prix or Bahrain government – we shall take it all down. We will expose the personal data of any person who supports this race in any way. You have been warned. Once the festivities for this race begin in Bahrain, all bets are off. We call upon Bernie Eccelstone while there is still time; cancel your blood race now.

We Are Anonymous
We Are Everywhere
We Are Legion
We Do Not Forgive
We Do Not Forget
Bernie Eccelstone & Bahrain Royal Family, it’s too late to…
Expect US!
