Is This the Document Russian Lawyer Veselnitskaya Shopped to Donald Trump Jr?

In Archive, Donald Trump Jr., Hillary Clinton, Russia, Trump on July 19, 2017 at 2:53 AM

UPDATED 10/09/2017

Note: LeakSource does not necessarily believe the opinions and Russia scaremongering contained in some of the articles linked below. Does that mean we are Trump supporters? No. To date we just have not found any reasonable evidence to back up claims of Trump/Russia collusion. The main focus of this post is the document. The selected paragraphs are simply to connect the dots through mainstream media sources to show the likeliness that this is the document Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya gave to Donald Trump Jr. All signs point to Veselnitskaya using the lure of opposition research (which was noting revelatory) as an in to meet, where she could then focus on her real goal of lobbying against the Magnitsky act. There was no nefarious election collusion masterminded by Putin here, like the media outlets below would want you to believe.

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

Bloomberg:

Around the time of last summer’s meeting with Trump Jr., Russian attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya was peddling a new political spin on a well-worn international scandal, according to one person familiar with her work. She was focusing on hedge fund manager William Browder, the subject of her scorn and of a film she was promoting, and on Ziff Brothers Investments LLC, which had invested with Browder, the person said.

Russian prosecutors said they were opening new lines of inquiry against these investors. What Veselnitskaya saw in these steps were alleged tax improprieties that would be a black mark on the Democratic Party, because Browder and at least one member of the wealthy Ziff family had contributed to the Clinton Global Initiative, the person said.
———————————————————————————————————————————
WaPo:

Rinat Akhmetshin said that “as part of her work, with her clients” Veselnitskaya had found that an American hedge fund was violating Russian tax and securities law and that the fund “seemed linked to the Democratic National Committee.” He said that Veselnitskaya “left a document behind” after the session.
———————————————————————————————————————————
WSJ:

Veselnitskaya said her meeting wasn’t coordinated with official Russian government structures. She did, however, share information similar to what the Russian prosecutor general’s office gave to Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R., Calif.) in a Moscow meeting two months earlier. Namely, she said she wanted to inform the Trump campaign of allegations that an American firm Mr. Browder worked with, Ziff Brothers Investments, had dodged taxes in Russia and later donated to Democrats.

“Both during the meeting, while I was talking to Donald Trump Jr., and in the written materials I prepared, I was trying to tell the story that I myself had personally investigated,” Ms. Veselnitskaya said, referring to Mr. Browder.
———————————————————————————————————————————
CHAIKA/ROHRABACHER/VESELNITSKAYA CONNECTION

NYT:

Rob Goldstone, the former British tabloid journalist and music promoter who arranged the Trump Tower meeting, had written in an email to Donald Trump Jr. that Ms. Veselnitskaya would bring information from Yury Chaika ,the Prosecutor General of Russia, that would be damaging to Mrs. Clinton.

What that information was is still not known. But at the time, Mr. Chaika was trying to push back against an American sanctions law, the Magnitsky Act, in part by trying to discredit an American-born businessman, William J. Browder, who had lobbied for its passage. At least some of the information seemed to concern accusations of tax evasion by prominent Democratic donors involved with Mr. Browder.

Mr. Chaika made the same accusations in a statement on his website and in documents handed to Rohrabacher when he was in Moscow. In an interview, Mr. Rohrabacher said using the information in opposition research against the Democrats in the presidential campaign had never crossed his mind. “That’s a big zero,” he said.
———————————————————————————————————————————
DailyBeast:

That same Prosecutor General’s office also was listed as being behind the “very high level and sensitive information” that was offered to Donald Trump Jr. in an email prior to his now infamous meeting with Russian officials at Trump Tower on June 9—just days before the congressional hearing. Veselnitskaya attended that meeting with Trump Jr. She also happens to have worked as a prosecutor in the Moscow region and is a close personal friend of Chaika.

As Rohrabacher pitched for support in the weeks after returning from Russia, Rinat Akhmetshin set to work on lobbying House members. A U.S. congressional staffer told The Daily Beast that former California Rep. Ron Dellums (D-CA) and Akhmetshin showed up at their office without an appointment.

“They said they were lobbying on behalf of a Russian company called Prevezon and asked us to delay the Global Magnitsky Act or at least remove Magnitsky from the name,” the staffer said.

Prevezon’s lawyer at the time was Natalia Veselnitskaya, who was working to defend the Cyprus-based company against U.S. money laundering allegations related to the massive fraud uncovered by Magnitsky.
———————————————————————————————————————————
TheHill:

Just days after meeting Trump Jr., Veselnitskaya also attended a dinner with Rohrabacher and roughly 20 other guests at a dinner club frequented by Republicans.

In an interview with The Hill on Wednesday, Rohrabacher said, “There was a dinner at the Capitol Hill Club here with about 20 people. I think I was the only congressman there. They were talking about the Magnitsky case. But that wasn’t just the topic. There was a lot of other things going on. So I think she was there, but I don’t remember any type of conversation with her between us. But I understand she was at the table.”
———————————————————————————————————————————
THE DOCUMENT

While searching through the leaked emails of U.S. State Department Russian intelligence official Robert Otto, LeakSource discovered documents that Rohrabacher received from Moscow regarding the Magnitsky Act. Included is a file labeled confidential, which contains details matching what news outlets have so far reported on regarding the information Veselnitskaya gave to Trump Jr. That, along with the reported connections between Chaika, Rohrabacher, and Veselnitskaya gives credence to this being the document that was given to Trump Jr.

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH HILLARY CLINTON AND THE DNC?

Ziff Brothers Investments’ political contributions in 2016 (via OpenSecrets):

———————————————————————————————————————————
RT:

Natalia Veselnitskaya insisted her meeting with Trump Jr. was aimed at countering Browder’s lobbying in America and had nothing to do with the US presidential election.

“I am already tired of talking about it, but apparently nobody wants to hear. This was the story that I brought to Donald Trump Jr. I wanted him to know that Browder, a person who gave up his US citizenship, is trying to manipulate people in Congress,” she said.

“If the Senate wishes to hear the real story, I will be happy to speak up and share everything I wanted to tell Mr. Trump,” she added, referring to the alleged economic crimes that Browder is suspected of in Russia. “I will share everything I know about this situation when millions came into my country and billions left it – and nobody paid taxes.”

Veselnitskaya also said she is now concerned for the safety of her family as it’s been revealed that Browder’s team spied on her family’s activities even before her meeting with Trump Jr.

“It’s been revealed that Mr. Browder and his team have been gathering information about my family,” she told RT, adding, that Browder’s team “found photos of my house and sent them to Kyle Parker… a famous man in the House of Representatives, who worked for Mr Browder for many years – and not for any congressmen or congress as a whole.”

People working for Browder also shared all her personal details with representatives of the State Department, Veselnitskaya said.

An email containing an alleged photo of the Veselnitskaya’s house was discovered in the trove of hacked Robert Otto emails that were leaked.

UPDATE 10/09/2017

CNN:

An attorney for the Russian billionaire who allegedly pushed for the June 2016 meeting between senior members of Trump’s team and a Russian lawyer says he has documents showing the meeting wasn’t really about dirt on Hillary Clinton.

An email exchange and talking points provided to CNN are the latest indication of how some of the meeting participants plan to make their case about why the meeting with Donald Trump Jr. did not amount to collusion between Russian officials and the Trump campaign.

The new information stands in contrast with the initial email pitching the meeting to Trump Jr., which promised damaging information on Clinton.

The documents were provided by Scott Balber, who represents Aras and Emin Agalarov, the billionaire real estate developer and his pop star son who requested the June 2016 meeting.

Balber, who went to Moscow to obtain the documents from Veselnitskaya, said in an interview with CNN that the emails and talking points show she was focused on repealing the Magnitsky Act, not providing damaging information on Clinton.

The message was muddled, Balber said, when it was passed like a game of telephone from Veselnitskaya through the Agalarovs to Goldstone.

Balber also suggested that Goldstone “probably exaggerated and maybe willfully contorted the facts for the purpose of making the meeting interesting to the Trump people.”

The emails provided to CNN between Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya and publicist Rob Goldstone — who arranged the meeting with Trump Jr. — show Veselnitskaya asked the morning of the meeting for a Russian-American lobbyist to be added because of his knowledge of the Magnitsky Act, the legislation that put in place US sanctions discussed at the meeting.

And a five-page talking points memo also provided to CNN shows Veselnitskaya’s case to repeal the Magnitsky Act to improve US-Russia relations, with a passing reference to a possible financer of Clinton’s campaign.

The memo, marked confidential and dated May 30, 2016, accuses US lawmakers of falsifying the story of attorney Sergei Magnitsky, who was killed while in Russian custody in 2009. US lawmakers passed the Magnitsky Act in 2012 to punish the Russians allegedly responsible for his death.

As part of her explanation, Veselnitskaya’s talking points accuse the “Ziff brothers” — three billionaire brothers who had run a hedge fund company together — of violating Russian law, as well as their connections to Democratic politics.

“Ziff brothers participated in financing both Obama presidential campaign, American press dubs them as ‘main sponsors of Democrats,’ ” the memo states, according to a translated version. “It’s entirely possible they also take part in financing Hillary Clinton’s campaign.”

Examining Hacked Emails From US State Dept’s Top Russian Intel Official Robert Otto

In Archive, Hacking, Russia, State Dept, USA on July 18, 2017 at 1:25 AM

Perhaps you know that the U.S. State Department has a direct bearing on the agenda formation not only at home but throughout the world.

Now you can make sure it’s true. Let me show you the correspondence between the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency Robert P. Otto and his colleagues, CIA officers and other intelligence agencies, as well as representatives of mainstream media, NGOs, international funds and think tanks.

With the respect for privacy I’ve deleted his correspondence with his wife and relatives. The rest of emails will give evidence of who is responsible for different information campaigns, the so-called mythmaking and essentially engaged in the promotion of “American values” throughout the world.

DOCUMENT CACHE CAN BE DOWNLOADED HERE

ForeignPolicy:

The State Department did not confirm or deny the authenticity of the emails. “The Department of State is well aware that malicious actors often target email accounts of government and business leaders across the United States. As a matter of policy, we do not discuss specific attempts or incidents,” a State Department spokesman said.

But the official’s expertise in Russian politics and organized crime makes him a significant target.

“He’s probably the top intelligence guy in the entire U.S. government on Russia. He knows more than anybody about what’s going on there,” said one source whose correspondence with the official was revealed in the hack.

The official’s emails were primarily conversations among Russia experts in government, including the intelligence community, exchanging articles, newsletters, and thoughts on current events. The official corresponded frequently with other Russia experts in academia and the think-tank world.

While several of his colleagues contacted by FP said they were unaware of the hack, they were not surprised, given recent events.

According to a second source whose correspondence showed up in the hacked emails, at least one other Russia expert was recently hacked — an Australian academic with a history of government service, although the emails appear not to have been released.

There’s no evidence proving Russian hackers targeted the official, but the first media outlet to pick up on the hack was an obscure website in Crimea (NewsFront), which published specific emails and provided a link to the cache. A former employee of the news agency had claimed in an article that the website is financed by the Russian secret service, and its topics assigned by top political leadership in Moscow.

A Donetsk, Ukraine-based editor for the website, who declined to provide his name, said allegations of Russian government funding were untrue and “funny.”

“NO FOUL PLAY WHATSOEVER”: Peter W. Smith, GOP Operative Hunting for Hillary Clinton’s 33,000 Deleted Emails, Commits Suicide…

In Archive, Hillary Clinton, Peter W. Smith, Trump on July 14, 2017 at 1:02 AM

Image via Peter W. Smith’s Twitter

07/13/2017

ChicagoTribune:

A Republican donor and operative from Chicago’s North Shore who said he had tried to obtain Hillary Clinton’s missing emails from hackers killed himself in a Minnesota hotel room days after talking to The Wall Street Journal about his efforts, public records show.

In a room at a Rochester hotel used almost exclusively by Mayo Clinic patients and relatives, Peter W. Smith, 81, left a carefully prepared file of documents, which includes a statement police called a suicide note in which he said he was in ill health and a life insurance policy was expiring.

Days earlier, the financier from suburban Lake Forest gave an interview to the Journal about his quest, and it published stories about his efforts beginning in late June.

At the time, the newspaper reported Smith’s May 14 death came about 10 days after he granted the interview. Mystery shrouded how and where he had died, but Shane Harris, the lead reporter on the stories, said on a podcast he had no reason to believe the death was the result of foul play and that Smith likely had died of natural causes.

However, the Chicago Tribune obtained a Minnesota state death record filed in Olmsted County that says Smith committed suicide in a hotel near the Mayo Clinic at 1:17 p.m. on Sunday, May 14. He was found with a bag over his head with a source of helium attached. A medical examiner’s report gives the same account, without specifying the time, and a report from Rochester police further details his suicide.

In the note recovered by police, Smith apologized to authorities and said that “NO FOUL PLAY WHATSOEVER” was involved in his death. He wrote that he was taking his own life because of a “RECENT BAD TURN IN HEALTH SINCE JANUARY, 2017” and timing related “TO LIFE INSURANCE OF $5 MILLION EXPIRING.”

“Tomorrow is my last day,” Smith told a man at the hotel while he worked on a computer in the business center, printing documents between 8 and 9 p.m. on May 13, according to the police reports.

One of Smith’s former employees told the Tribune he thought the elderly man had gone to the famed clinic to be treated for a heart condition. Mayo spokeswoman Ginger Plumbo said Thursday she could not confirm Smith had been a patient, citing medical privacy laws.

The Journal stories said it was on Labor Day weekend in 2016 that Smith had assembled a team to acquire emails the team theorized might have been stolen from the private server Clinton had used while secretary of state. Smith’s focus was the more than 33,000 emails Clinton said she deleted because they related to personal matters. A huge cache of other Clinton emails were made public.

Smith told the Journal he believed the missing emails might have had been obtained by hackers. He also said he thought the correspondence related to Clinton’s official duties. He told the Journal he worked independently and was not part of the Trump campaign. He also told the Journal he and his team found five groups of hackers, two of them Russian groups, who claimed to have Clinton’s missing emails.

Smith had a history of doing opposition research, the formal term for unflattering information that political operatives dig up about rival candidates.

For years, Democratic President Bill Clinton was Smith’s target. The wealthy businessman had a hand in exposing the “Troopergate” allegations about Bill Clinton’s sex life. And he discussed financing a probe of a 1969 trip Bill Clinton had taken while in college to the Soviet Union, according to Salon magazine.Smith’s death occurred at the Aspen Suites in Rochester, records show. They list the cause of death as “asphyxiation due to displacement of oxygen in confined space with helium.”

Rochester Police Chief Roger Peterson on Wednesday called his manner of death “unusual,” but a funeral home worker said he’d seen it before.

An employee with Rochester Cremation Services, the funeral home that responded to the hotel, said he helped remove Smith’s body from his room and recalled seeing a tank.

The employee, who spoke on the condition he not be identified because of the sensitive nature of Smith’s death, described the tank as being similar in size to a propane tank on a gas grill. He did not recall seeing a bag that Smith would have placed over his head. He said the coroner and police were there and that he “didn’t do a lot of looking around.”

“When I got there and saw the tank, I thought, ‘I’ve seen this before,’ and was able to put two and two together,” the employee said.

An autopsy was conducted, according to the death record. The Southern Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office declined a Tribune request for the autopsy report and released limited information about Smith’s death. A spokeswoman for AXA Equitable Life Insurance Co., a company listed in documents provided by police, had no immediate comment.

The Final Exit Network, a Florida-based nonprofit, provides information and support to people who suffer from a terminal illness and want to kill themselves. Fran Schindler, a volunteer with the group, noted that the best-selling book Final Exit, written by Derek Humphry in 1991 and revised several times since, explains in detail the helium gas method.

According to figures from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, 172 people committed suicide by suffocation from January 2007 to date. Of those asphyxia deaths, 15 involved the use of a plastic bag over the head.

It could not be determined how many also involved the use of helium, an odorless and tasteless gas, that is non-toxic.

“The helium does not have a direct effect. A bag over someone’s head depletes the oxygen for the person and causes death,” said Becky Schlikerman, spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. “The addition of helium may displace the oxygen faster but does not have a direct effect on a person.”

Police found a receipt from a local Walmart time stamped from the previous day, May 13 at 12:53 p.m. The receipt was for the purchase of “Helium Jumbo” and other items. Police also noted that the two helium tanks in the room were draped with vinyl-covered exercise ankle or wrist weights. The report did not offer an explanation for the weights. Police said that because they did not suspect foul play, they had not viewed any security video from the Walmart store to confirm that Smith had bought the tanks himself.

Smith’s remains were cremated in Minnesota, the records said. He was married to Janet L. Smith and had three children and three grandchildren, according to his obituary. Tribune calls to family members were not returned.

His obituary said Smith was involved in public affairs for more than 60 years and it heralded him as a “quietly generous champion of efforts to ensure a more economically and politically secure world.”

Smith’s last will and testament, signed last Feb. 21, is seven pages long and on file in Probate Court in Lake County. The will gives his wife his interest in their residential property and his tangible personal property and says remaining assets should be placed into two trusts.

Peter Smith wrote two blog posts dated the day before he was found dead. One challenged U.S. intelligence agency findings that Russia interfered with the 2016 election. Another post predicted: “As attention turns to international affairs, as it will shortly, the Russian interference story will die of its own weight.”

ChicagoSunTimes:

The Chicago Sun-Times has learned that the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential campaign and whether there was collusion with the Trump campaign,  is “very interested” in the opposition research operation put together by Peter W. Smith, the Lake Forest resident who died on May 14, and his business associate, John J. Szobocsan, who this summer is teaching an investment banking course in the masters of finance program at IIT.

“The committee will want to speak with or get documents from everybody associated with the Peter Smith operation,” a source close to the committee told the Sun-Times.

To everyone, in order to be totally transparent, I am releasing the entire email chain of my emails with Rob Goldstone about the meeting on June 9, 2016. The first email on June 3, 2016 was from Rob, who was relating a request from Emin, a person I knew from the 2013 Ms. Universe Pageant near Moscow. Emin and his father have a very highly respected company in Moscow. The information they suggested they had about Hillary Clinton I thought was Political Opponent Research. I first wanted to just have a phone call but when that didn’t work out, they said the woman would be in New York and asked if I would meet. I decided to take the meeting. The woman, as she has said publicly, was not a government official. And, as we have said, she had no information to provide and wanted to talk about adoption policy and the Magnitsky Act. To put this in context, this occurred before the current Russian fever was in vogue. As Rob Goldstone said just today in the press, the entire meeting was “the most inane nonsense I ever heard. And I was actually agitated by it.”

Good morning
Emin just called and asked me to contact you with something very interesting.
The Crown prosecutor of Russia met with his father Aras this morning and in their meeting offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father.
This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump – helped along by Aras and Emin.
What do you think is the best way to handle this information and would you be able to speak to Emin about it directly?
I can also send this info to your father via Rhona, but it is ultra sensitive so wanted to send to you first.

On July 2, 1937, near the end of her pioneering flight around the world, Amelia Earhart vanished somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. Most experts, including the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum, believe Earhart likely ran out of fuel and crashed into the Pacific Ocean. But no trace of the aviator, navigator Fred Noonan or her twin-engine Lockheed Electra airplane were ever found, confounding historians and fueling conspiracy theories ever since. Now, new evidence has surfaced in U.S. government archives suggesting Earhart might not have crashed into the Pacific at all, but crash-landed in the Marshall Islands, was captured by the Japanese military and died while being held prisoner on the island of Saipan.

According to HISTORY’s upcoming investigative special “Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence,” retired federal agent Les Kinney scoured the National Archives for records that may have been overlooked in the search for the lost aviator.

Eighty years after the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan, new evidence may prove a shocking theory—that Earhart and Noonan were captured alive by the Japanese, and that the U.S. government knew she was in the custody of a foreign power, and may have covered it up.

Among thousands of documents Kinney uncovered was a photograph stamped with official Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) markings reading “Marshall Islands, Jaluit Atoll, Jaluit Island, Jaluit Harbor.” In the photo, a ship can be seen towing a barge with an airplane on the back; on a nearby dock are several people.

Kinney argues the photo must have been taken before 1943, as U.S. air forces conducted more than 30 bombing runs on Jaluit in 1943-44. He believes the plane on the barge is the Electra, and that two of the people on the dock are Earhart and Noonan. As part of the program’s investigation, Doug Carner, a digital forensic analyst, examined the photo and determined it was authentic and had not been manipulated, while Kent Gibson, another forensic analyst who specializes in facial recognition, said it was “very likely” the individuals in it are Earhart and Noonan. Both analysts identified the ship in the photo as the Japanese military vessel Koshu Maru, which is thought to be the ship that took Earhart and Noonan away after their crash landing.

These two Japanese communiques were also found in the National Archives by Les Kinney. They’re dated July 5, 1937, just three days after Earhart and Noonan disappeared. One of the documents—written in secret Japanese diplomatic code which was later decrypted by the U.S. Navy—states “since it is believed that she went down in the Marshall Islands…”

At the time these messages were sent, U.S. search efforts were focused on Earhart’s intended target, Howland Island, almost 800 miles away from the Marshall Islands. This implies that the Japanese were most likely tracking Earhart’s flight and had a much better idea as to where she had actually crashed. The fact that they were housed at the National Archives also implies the United States may have had knowledge of Earhart’s capture by the Japanese, but have kept information about her true fate classified for 80 years.

The metal piece held on the left in this photo was found below the surface of Mili Atoll in the Marshall Islands, in 2015. This photo shows that it’s a visual match to the rolled aluminum trim edge around the landing gear of a Lockheed Electra L-10. This was the same model of plane that Earhart flew on her ill-fated mission.

The location of this crucial piece of evidence was revealed to Dick Spink by the son of an eyewitness who saw a twin engine plane crashing onto the reef next to Mili in July 1937. The witness also told his son that the plane was dragged along the beach and then brought to Jaluit—the location of the dock in the newly-discovered photo.

These commemorative stamps were issued in 1987 by the government of the Marshall Islands to observe what people of the region believe was the 50th Anniversary of the crash landing of Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan, just off of Mili Atoll. The stamps were designed with the input from many Marshallese eyewitnesses to the events of July 1937.

The ship in the lower right corner stamp, which witnesses claimed took away Earhart, Noonan and their damaged plane, is the same Japanese ship that appears in the recently discovered dock photo of Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan—a photo that no one knew even existed until its recent discovery by researcher Les Kinney. The ship was positively identified as the Koshu from documents created by the United States Navy’s Office of Naval Intelligence, which were also recovered by Les Kinney in the U.S. National Archives.

In 1964 two former U.S. Marines, Everett Henson, Jr. of Sacramento, California, and Bill G. Burks of Dallas, would come forward to say they were part of a group of Marines who recovered the remains of Amelia Earhart and Frederick Noonan on Saipan in July of 1944. The remains had been found in an unmarked grave outside a small graveyard and placed in metal canisters for transport to the United States. To this writing, the U.S. Marine Corps will neither confirm or deny that such an event occurred.

Donald Kothera and his “Cleveland Group” visited Saipan in 1968 searching for evidence supporting Earhart and Noonan’s presence and death there. Kothera’s interview of native Anna Diaz Magofna, who claimed to have seen the beheading of a tall white man as a 7-year-old on Saipan in 1937, is among the most compelling of the Saipan witnesses’ accounts. Kothera excavated the suspected gravesite and discovered 189 bone fragments, which analysis concluded were that of a 40-year-old Caucasian female. Earhart was 39 when she vanished. The bone fragments have since disappeared.

Using a map of the gravesite made by the Kothera group, HISTORY investigators went to Saipan to conduct the first large-scale excavation of what they believe is the location Earhart and Noonan were buried. Though they were able to find the site where Kothera originally excavated, they were unable to unearth more bone fragments for DNA testing, or any additional clues.

The idea that Earhart may have crash-landed on the Marshall Islands first gained traction in the 1960s, after CBS correspondent Fred Goerner published an investigative work titled The Search for Amelia Earhart. The book claimed that Earhart and Noonan were captured by the Japanese, who had been extending their influence into the Pacific, and died as prisoners on the island of Saipan. Some have posited that Earhart was in fact a spy, sent by the U.S. government to conduct surveillance on Japanese activity in the Pacific.

Other theories have proliferated in the 80 years since Earhart’s disappearance, which continues to be a point of fascination for both expert and amateur sleuths. Some have argued she crashed and sank in Papua New Guinea. Just last month, The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) brought a team of forensic dogs to the uninhabited Nikumaroro Island, hoping to find evidence that Earhart and Noonan landed there.

Despite such fervent efforts to unlock the mystery of Earhart’s fate, no confirmed trace of the pilot, Noonan, or their Lockheed Electra plane have ever been found.
