WikiLeaks has made a cameo appearance in the new season of Netflix’s House of Cards.

The scene shows the Underwood’s campaign manager LeAnn Harvey opening an email from rogue NSA hacker Aidan Macallan, who has been illegally surveilling citizens and political opponents for the Underwoods . “I warned you. Call off the dogs, or more to come,” it says, along with a link to Wikileaks using .net instead of .org.

Harvey opens the link, revealing the headline “Internal Police Memo Concluded Convenience Store Explosion was Due to a Gas Leak Long Before FBI was Called In – New Evidence That Attack was Trumped Up.”

We then see Director of Communications Seth Grayson going to White House Chief of Staff Doug Stamper, to have him sign off on a statement for the leak. Grayson says there is public outcry for answers as to what happened with the election. Stamper deflects saying, “The statement’s about the FBI. Everybody trusts the FBI.”

Searching the Podesta Emails released by Wikileaks turned up a House of Cards reference in a conversation between John Podesta and Wendy Abrams, a Chicago-area environmental activist and founder of the non-profit Cool Globes.

This isn’t the first time House of Cards has touched on current events relating to hacking and leaks. In the fifth episode of the second season, Anonymous-linked journalist Barrett Brown is mentioned by the series’ hacker character, Gavin.

Barrett Brown was recently released from prison after serving four years for simply sharing a link to an already-stolen trove of information from the Anonymous Stratfor hack that was subsequently leaked to WikiLeaks.

Modeled on some of the real-life hackers whose names have grabbed headlines over the years, Gavin is under the thumb of the FBI, and he asks for Barrett Brown’s freedom in exchange for services rendered.

House of Cards – Elysian Fields

The latest season of Netflix’s House of Cards features an episode in which politicians and businessmen attend a Bohemian Grove-like retreat dubbed “Elysian Fields,” complete with an ominous statue and a mock human sacrifice.

The episode starts with robed figures chanting in the woods while conducting a ceremony in which they set a human effigy ablaze. A crow serves as a substitute for the Bohemian Club’s real mascot, the owl.

According to ancient pyramid texts, Elysium (or the Elysian Fields), is the place passed through before entering the “Other World.”

The club’s motto, “Buzzing Bees Sting Not Here.” A play on Bohemian’s motto “Weaving Spiders Come Not Here.” Both implying that outside concerns and business deals are to be left at the gates, though discussion of business often occurs between members.

As referenced in the episode, The Grove is particularly famous for a Manhattan Project planning meeting that took place there in September 1942, subsequently leading to the atomic bomb. Those attending the meeting included J. Robert Oppenheimer and Ernest Lawrence, along with various military officials, the presidents of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Standard Oil and General Electric.

The fictional ritual alludes to an actual ceremony conducted inside the Bohemian Grove, which is nestled within the Redwoods north of San Francisco.

The Grove is the 2,700 acre meeting site in Monte Rio, California, where wealthy political, business, media and entertainment power brokers secretly gather for two weeks in July.

When InfoWars founder Alex Jones famously infiltrated and taped inside The Grove in 2000 he documented the “Cremation of Care” ritual, in which hooded men sacrificed a human effigy to an owl deity with the goal to rid themselves of worry throughout their stay.

Bohemian Grove has also hosted numerous influential political figures and former US presidents, including Bilderberg kingpin Henry Kissinger, Jimmy Carter, George HW and George W Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Richard Nixon, who called the club “the most faggy goddamned thing you could ever imagine.” Referencing the homosexual activity that has been rumored to happen between elite members and male prostitutes during the retreat. Many being conservative politicians, who at the same time spout anti-gay rhetoric in public.

“Some of the most powerful men in the world are gathered in this clearing,” the series’ protagonist Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) says. “They gather here to seek God between the branches of these magnificent trees. They eat together, they piss next to each other, and they carve up the world like a Sunday roast. This is where the real power is.” Underwood then proceeding to scheme at the club with other influential members throughout the episode.

Without another Alex Jones style infiltration or a Bohemian Grove whistleblower, this is probably the closest thing we will get to a realistic version of the inner machinations of a secret club such as this. So enjoy.
