Canada’s CSEC Spying for NSA: Set Up Covert Sites in 20 Countries, Including Trading Partners

Greg Weston/Glenn Greenwald/Ryan Gallagher/CBC:

A top secret document retrieved by American whistleblower Edward Snowden reveals Canada has set up covert spying posts around the world and conducted espionage against trading partners at the request of the U.S. National Security Agency.

The leaked NSA document being reported exclusively by CBC News reveals Canada is involved with the huge American intelligence agency in clandestine surveillance activities in “approximately 20 high-priority countries.”

The four-page missive is stamped “Top Secret” and dated April 3, 2013. That makes it one of the freshest documents Snowden was able to walk away with before he went public in June.

Much of the document contains hyper-sensitive operational details which CBC News has chosen not to make public.

“CSEC shares with the NSA their unique geographic access to areas unavailable to the U.S,” the document says.

“The intelligence exchange with CSEC covers worldwide national and transnational targets.”

“CSEC offers resources for advanced collection, processing and analysis, and has opened covert sites at the request of NSA,” the document states.

“Co-operative efforts include the exchange of liaison officers and integrees,” the document reveals, a reference to CSEC operatives working inside the NSA, and vice-versa.

It notes the NSA also supplies much of the computer hardware and software CSEC uses for encryption, decoding and other state-of-the-art essentials of electronic spying needed for “collection, processing and analytic efforts.”

In return, the NSA acknowledges that its Canadian counterpart provides the partnership with its own “cryptographic products, cryptanalysis, technology and software.”

Finally, the U.S. agency says CSEC has increased its investment in research and development projects “of mutual interest.”

Wesley Wark, a Canadian security and intelligence expert at the University of Ottawa, reviewed the leaked document at the invitation of CBC News, and says he isn’t surprised CSEC would be asked by the NSA to set up covert foreign spying operations.

He says it is not uncommon for embassies and consulates to be used as listening posts when a close proximity to targets is required.

Wark says if a country feels targeted by a Canadian embassy, it can put everyone working there under a cloud of suspicion: “Are they really diplomats or are they spies?”

Approval for CSEC to establish a covert spying post at the request of the NSA would have to come from the ministerial level of the Canadian government — or even from the prime minister himself.

Guardian:

For the second year in a row, a young American whistleblower alarmed at the unfettered and at times cynical deployment of power by the world’s foremost superpower has been voted the Guardian’s person of the year.

Edward Snowden, who leaked an estimated 200,000 files that exposed the extensive and intrusive nature of phone and internet surveillance and intelligence gathering by the US and its western allies, was the overwhelming choice of more than 2,000 people who voted.

The NSA whistleblower garnered 1,445 votes. In a distant second, from a list of 10 candidates chosen by Guardian writers and editors, came Marco Weber and Sini Saarela, the Greenpeace activists who spearheaded the oil rig protest over Russian Arctic drilling. They received 314 votes. Pope Francis gained 153 votes, narrowly ahead of blogger and anti-poverty campaigner Jack Monroe, who received 144. Snowden’s victory was as decisive as Chelsea Manning’s a year earlier.

Final Vote Count

Edward Snowden 1,445

Marco Weber and Sini Saarela 314

Pope Francis 153

Jack Monroe 144

Waris Dirie 69

Satoshi Nakamoto 33

Kanye West 28

Andy Murray 22

Elon Musk 11

Trenton Oldfield – wins against deportation

In Activism, Al Jazeera NEWSHOUR, Australia, Australia, Britain, FOI, leaksource, Politics, twitter on December 10, 2013 at 7:31 AM

In April 2012 Trenton Oldfield swam out to protest elitism by disrupting the 158th Oxford – Cambridge boat race.

Trenton was convicted of public nuisance and was sentenced to six months jail.

It was then later that the Homes Secretary deemed Trenton “an undesirable” thus rejecting his claim for spousal visa and ordering Mr Oldfield to leave the country.

Trenton has resided in U.K since 2001. He based his appeal on the assumption that if he returned to Australia his wife and daughter would face discrimination.

“There are particularly racist attacks on people of Indian descent.”

Mr Oldfield then made a reference to Indians who been burnt and physically assaulted in Australia.

“I don’t think I could put either Deepa or my child through that,” he said.

It may also be important to point out that Mr. Oldfield was “sobbing” as he spoke….etc,.

Judge Kevin Moore agreed with his lawyer, Stephanie Harrison, who argued that Mr Oldfield’s good work in the community outweighed the inconvenience caused by his protest, which he has vowed never to repeat.

In what could only be seen as an attempt to get this claptrap out of the court ,

“He should not be doubly punished.”

And with that…lets hope we never see Mr. Oldfield have to put his family at any risk by returning to Australia.
